(Slam this!)
In the world that has born the people
Who have born the contrivances and contraptions
The back hoe plow auto hydro axes
Drilling noisy dirty tampering,
Oily smelly greasy meddling,
Super high frequency, ultra-violet medical
Over charged, over powered, and overpowering equipment
Engines with toxic exhausts and grim consequence
In a world where millions starve
And Americans spend fortunes on exercise gizmos
Tummy mabobbers, and ride and glide bow flexing thigh majigs
Why?
Because we're so damn fat
Where happy meals feeding the already over-fed
Are fired off like automatic rounds
And with the right kind of ears
One can hear the unmistakable sounds
Of a nation just suckin' em down
Ker-ching!
Think of just over a century ago
When our food was made slow
And the world had a moment to breathe
Between its this and its that of daily life
Good old pot roast takin' a whole day to roast
Could have been from the cow down the road
Potatoes and corn from the garden
Dinner was an occasion
But, shit not tonight
Im gonna get a double whopping supermega delicious combo bacon
cheese thingy
Without even leaving my vehicle
In a world where beggers stand on busy streetsides
Holding cardboard signs
Saying something warm like
"Bless you, I'm hungry."
And I believe that any one of the passers-by
Would stop and talk to the man
If they were'nt also themselves stuck up way down in the wound
up traffic muck.
In a world where this overall malaise and
discontent festers in the youth
Into a pixie stik mix of anger and confusion
That breaks the locks on Grandpa's good old gun chest
Takes the guns back to school,
And finally brings the anger and hatred to rest
In a world that seems so out of control
Leaving everyone feeling useless and helpless and hopeless
Saying my vote doesn't count
Why, why should I
No one cares about the little guy
In a world where the grandparents curl up
on cold floors
Even more useless than before
Clutching newspapers with an arthritic grip on todays reality
Wondering how slipped out the days of yore
And in slipped all the hoodlums and gangstas and strangers at
the door
In a world where bright and shiny lights shine
always
All nights all days
Who will turn them off? Who can turn them off?
In a world where grassy lawns run rampant
Drinking, wasting liquids to fill spaces underplanned
So over-greened by fertilizers distibuted like medications from
noisy machines
In world that crams itself into every orafice
of my life
The meddling tenticles, and blinding neon lights
Of frightening advertisments
Billboards, flyers, coupons, bargains, gimmicks, and tricks screaming
look at me!
Sales events, limited time offers, collect all five, plus shipping
and handling
I can't handle it!
In a world where the mommies and daddies
Take Prozak and Zoloft
And the babies are raised on Ritalin
Tylenol, Dayquil, Nyquil
Night time sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head,
fever
So you can rest medicine
Be your best medicine,
So you can fight it, and beat it, and kill it with pain killers
When the world becomes too painful
Take Codene and Perkaset
Take anything you can get
All the pharmaceuticals of red, white, and blue
And the side effects, take somethin' for them too
But say no to drugs, I'm confused
In a world where having 14 children is applauded
on national television
And the natural reaction to birth is celebration
In Gabon, the natural reaction is starvation
Babies keep poppiní out fresh into
the world
And the world is starting to look like the jackel mother of 12
on the Savannah
Givin' everything its got and more to its litter, it's emaciated
and pale
While its young, its human children
Sit around and bicker over whose goddamn theology is better
In a world that has no more frontiers
In a world with no where left to go
In a world where solar efficient homes aren't up to code
In a world that revs its engines just to see how loud they'll
get
In a world that catches fish and throws them back
In a world where one person is payed to clean up another person's
mess
Where poverty and slavery
Still allow the imbalence of wealth that could produce the technology
And generate the funds that bought and brought my computer straight
to me
In a world where the tobacco industry and the automobile industry
Have found themselves on top because of addiction
In a world that hides important facts from us
In a world that jams useless trivia in our faces
In a world that uses everything once then throws it away
And is doing the same with its future
In a world that makes me sad and sick
And want to cry and puke sometimes
In a world that started off so beautiful before all the make
up
In a world that can still be so beautiful sometimes
I'm really glad
To know you're out there
Helping me turn off the bathroom lights.
