Book of the Month
The Voice of the Butterfly - John Nichols's, the
author of The Milagro Beanfield War,
brings his vintage wit to the absurdities of modern life being
challenged by an environmental
butterfly liberation movement . When Suicide City's new highway
bypass threatens
the home of an exquisitely obscure butterfly, aging '60s radical
and continuing
proponent of losing battles Charley McFarland rallies an off-the-rails
band
of misfits to help fight the powers that be. Tthis time on behalf
of the Rocky
Mountain phistic copper butterfly. A dark comedy of ideals and
unlikely heroes.
McFarland's dysfunctional, yet oddly grace-filled Butterfly
Coalition had me
laughing out loud. It made me aware once again of what activists
can
accomplish, usually despite ourselves. As with Milagro, Nichols
empowers us with a
heady mix of politics and humor, a tonic needed in these times.

"What the Bleep!". A phenomenal film
about how we are the creators of our reality
and how we perceive existence, from Quantum physics to laughter,
from self discovery
to neuro transmittors, from cellular receptivity to seeing where
our thoughts, past memories
and perceptions influence our body and emotions. A personal story
is also weaved into
scientific accounts ... very fascinating. It is playing this
week at the Metron...maybe only
to Friday. Yes, go an see it if you like to stretch your mind
and open up to possibilities!

OF DISSENT: ACTIVISM & AMERICAN DEMOCRACY
A new 42 minute documentary & activist tool about authentic
patriotism and protecting
First Amendment rights against the Bush administration's attempt
to discredit dissent
and limit free speech.
Update:
I saw the Movie "What the Bleep!" Eva Lindberg
said, "it is a phenomenal
film about how we are the creators of our reality and how we
perceive existence,
from Quantum physics to laughter, from self discovery to neuro
transmittors,
from cellular receptivity to seeing where our thoughts, past
memories and
perceptions influence our body and emotions."
It is somewhat similar to the movie The Butterfly Effect, that
we not only
cocreate our present reality, but the future as well and quite
possibly the
past. The power of conscious intention, as depicted in this film,
is just
incredible!! That's why the belief that "a butterfly can,
with a flap of its wings,
change the world and that the ripple it sends out can spawn a
hurricane" is the
very essence of our network's philosophy. Alan

Dave Matthews ponders big tours, butterflies and doing what a
rock star should.
After talking to Rainforest Action's Paul West at the Power to
the People Concert on
Saturday, September 11th about a benefit concert for the butterflies
and rainforests, I met
with Dennis Kucinich and Michael Franti backstage and asked Michael
if he
would do a benefit concert with Dave Matthews for the Butterfly
Gardeners
Association, Musicians for Peace and Rainforest Action. He said
he would love
to. I met with Dave's manager Patrick at the concert in Golden
Gate Park on
Sunday and gave him a copy of our CD for Dave, but forgot to
ask him about our
benefit. After we have a meeting at Rainforest Action's office
in San
Francisco, we will have more to report on this proposal. If you

- Benicia
Certified hypnotherapist, Gayla Reiter will lead participants
through a
hypnotic group regression to explore past lives. Proceeds of
the workshop benefit
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome services in the Northern California
area.
According to Ms. Reiter, "the regression experience often
serves as a
powerful catalyst for recognizing themes and karmic patterns
in relationships,
career, and areas of current life difficulties (such as health
challenges, phobias,
habit patterns, fears, etc.). The process empowers participants
to bring
subconscious "instincts" or motivating forces to the
conscious level where they
can be analyzed and a conscious choice may be made. A group discussion
following
the regression allows participants to more fully integrate the
information
obtained. Reading lists will also be distributed.
Ms. Reiter is a minister, author and certified hypnotherapist.
She has
appeared on scores of television and radio programs including
the Joan Rivers Show
and CBS's People are Talking.

Sun. Oct. 3 3-6 pm Benefit for America Coming Together
- Mill Valley
Want to do something to make a difference in the upcoming
election? Come to
our FUNdraising event.
America Coming Together is the largest voter mobilization
project in American
history. Knocking on doors and listening to voters' concerns,
ACT canvassers
are laying the groundwork to defeat George W. Bush and elect
Democrats in
federal, state, and local elections in 2004. The Swing State
Project targets the
17 'battleground' states - the states where the election will
be decided - with
a well organized, grassroots 'get out the vote' effort.
In 2000, the Presidency was decided by razor thin margins
in 17 states. This
is still a 50-50 nation, just as it was in 2000. Once again,
these 17 states
will decide the election and frame the issues debate for races
at every level.
With your help, we can propel progressive candidates to victory!

Sun. Oct. 3 8 pm *Kirtan with Jaya Lakshmi -
Sebastopol
Peacewave and Mystic Beat Lounge are happy to announce that
Jaya Lakshmi
returns to Sebastopol for an evening of Kirtan, Chanting and
dance. Jaya Lakshmi
(lead singer for the West coast based ethno-trance group Lost
at Last) leads
kirtan, (devotional singing from India), joined by Colin Menzies
on bass and
Peter van Gorder on percussion Didjeridoo & Doumbek.
Jaya Lakshmi has been leading ecstatic kirtans for several
years on the West
Coast and in Hawaii, and Europe. Her style of kirtan is
very unique, for it
weaves the beauty of simple and traditional kirtan with a more
modern artistic
expression. She draws upon her Native American ancestry for deep
inspiration.
Her soaring vocals convey a mystical wisdom that transcends cultural
boundaries.
"This issinging with your soul on fire, dancing hand in
hand with God. It is
knowing that the energy of God is invested in the Names, and
once you feel
it, once you taste the nectar, nothing else in the universe will
satisfy your
heart." says Lost at Last's Lakshmi "We want to generate
some positive and
uplifting energy for our community in these unsettled times."

Call Congress to fire Rumsfeld
In the weeks since the world first saw the horrible photos
from Abu Ghraib,
Donald Rumsfeld and the rest of the Pentagon's senior leadership
has come
before Congress to "accept responsibility" for the
scandal. But President Bush has
a strange idea of accountability - instead of asking for Rumsfeld's
resignation, he's praised him for doing a "superb job".
Your Congresspeople are home from Washington this week, and
it's a great
chance to let them know whether you agree with President Bush's
opinion of
Secretary Rumsfeld's job performance.
Call your Representative and Senators today, and tell them
to demand that
President Bush fire Donald Rumsfeld.
Senator Dianne Feinstein
San Diego, CA: 310-914-7300
Senator Barbara Boxer
Sacramento, CA: 415-403-0100
Congressman George Miller
Vallejo, CA: 925-602-1880
Americans have long believed that there should be consequences
when eaders
make bad decisions. Secretary Rumsfeld's decisions about the
invasion and its
aftermath led to the crisis that we face today.
General Anthony Zinni, former commander-in-chief of the United
States Central
Command and Bush administration special envoy to the Middle East
said,
"I blame the civilian leadership of the Pentagon directly.
Because if they
were given the responsibility, and if this was their war, and
by everything
that I understand, they promoted it and pushed it - certain elements
in there
certainly - even to the point of creating their own intelligence
to match their
needs, then they should bear the responsibility."
President Bush showed us again that he isn't willing to own
up to the
mistakes of his administration and hold people accountable. If
he won't, it's up to
us and our elected representatives to do so.
Thanks for making these calls today. - The MoveOn.org team

Defend Free Speech - Stop the Attacks on
Dr. Hatem Bazian
ACTIVISTS ARRESTED PROTESTING ARIEL SHARON'S VISIT TO THE
WHITE HOUSE
He is scheduled to speak on Muslims Through the Looking Glass
in Palo Alto on
Sunday, April 25 at 6 pm
As Ariel Sharon and George Bush met in the White House, the
Muslim American
Society Freedom Foundation, the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, and other
organizations
held a press conference, rally and civil disobedience action
demanding "Free
Palestine." The Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation
initiated today's
action, at which Mahdi Bray, the Executive Director of the MAS
Freedom
Foundation, and Sarah Friedman, National Outreach Coordinator
for the A.N.S.W.E.R.
Coalition, were arrested on the White House sidewalk in an act
of protest against
the Sharon/Bush war on the Palestinian people. When the police
blocked the
protest from marching forward on the White House sidewalk, Mahdi
Bray refused to
leave and Sarah Friedman stepped forward from the group of assembled
demonstrators and joined him. While they were being arrested,
supporters held signs
reading "Ariel Sharon and George Bush are War Criminals"
and chanted "Occupation
is a Crime, from Iraq to Palestine." Photos can be viewed

ACTION ALERT: DEFEND FREE SPEECH STOP THE ATTACKS ON DR. HATEM
BAZIAN!
Dr. Hatem Bazian, a highly respected lecturer at the University
of
California, Berkeley in the Near Eastern Studies and Ethnic Studies
Departments, is
being victimized by a mean-spirited national right-wing campaign.
His just defense
of the Palestinian people and his call to end war and suffering
of all in
Iraq are being maliciously portrayed as "incitement of violence
and sedition."
Capitalizing on the vicious anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate
fest that is
escalating in the U.S. as the occupation in Iraq erupts, reaching
critical stages,
right-wing and racist forces are engaged in attacks designed
to seriously
jeopardize the well-being of Arab- and Muslim-Americans - particularly
outspoken
community leaders, prominent activists and critical scholars
- in an attempt to
completely silence dissent against the violence of occupation.
Behind it all
is the racist belief that critical speech and the Bill of Rights
come to a
screeching halt at the doorstep of Arab- and Muslim-American
homes, thus falsely
positioning them as conspirators within. Popular statements such
as "we need
regime change," that are being made daily by many all the
way from John Kerry
to progressive activists, are being twisted and presented as
"sedition" and
"treason" in a McCarthy-style purge.
Although Arab- and Muslim-Americans are particularly targeted
and
scapegoated, the attack on the Bill of Rights and the right to
dissent is incrementally
affecting all sectors without exception. The intent is to create
a fully
compliant population, criminalize opposition, and expand the
political reach of an
ideological right-wing extreme.
Dr. Bazian has been receiving livid hate mail; his work at
the University is
being challenged; and extremist elements are threatening his
and his family's
well-being. Like millions of Americans and people around the
globe, Dr. Bazian
has been an articulate and outspoken critic of U.S. foreign policy
- calling
for a U.S. that is at peace with itself and with nations around
the world on
the basis of equality and liberty for all.
Hatem was a prominent student leader at San Francisco State
University during
the eighties and later at UC Berkeley in the nineties - both
are institutions
best known for their legacy of the free speech and anti-war movements.
During
his student years, he fully championed the rights of disenfranchised
communities, people of color, supported ethnic, labor and gender
studies, and worked
to organize an effective U.S. student movement on a national
scale in
opposition to both NAFTA and GATT. Hatem served as Chair of the
U.C. Berkeley Graduate
Assembly, and from 1995-1999 was coordinator of the Graduate
Minority Students
Project of the Graduate Assembly, through which he spearheaded
statewide
efforts to defeat Proposition 209, a 1996 California-wide anti-affirmative
action
proposition. Bazian was also active in the anti-Apartheid struggle
and Central
American solidarity movements. In 1990, Hatem was the Chair of
the National
People of Color Student Coalition and executive member of the
Board of the
United States Student Association.
We ask you to take a stand in clear support of free speech
and against the
racist criminalization of Arab-Americans, Muslim-Americans and
all people
standing against war and occupation. The escalation of rhetoric
by President Bush in
conjunction with the increase in military force and attacks on
the Iraqi
people will likely give yet another green light for further anti-Arab
and
anti-Muslim backlash. We need to take a strong stand now!

Leonard
Peltier Needs Your Support
The 10th Circuit Court's refusal to give Leonard a parole
hearing before
2008 leaves us really saddened after he's been dragged for nearly
28 years
through the shadowy corridors of American injustice. Our struggle
to free an
innocent man and a great human being continues unabated.
I'm passing this message along to you in hopes you can suggest
pre-ordering
the new Leonard Peltier book [see below] to folks on your list.
We urgently
need to reach new people. There's been a strong resurgence of
interest in
Leonard's case--and Indian Elders have had visions of his release.
We each need to
pitch in personally now with the renewed efforts to win his freedom.
Right
now we're trying to raise money to print a first edition of the
new book this
coming January--or as soon thereafter as we can manage. Have
you ordered your
own copy yet to help us bypass the corporate chokehold on publishing?
You can
do so easily at www.haveyouthought.com --our new free companion
website to the
book ~HAVE YOU THOUGHT of LEONARD PELTIER LATELY?~
I just saw Leonard in Leavenworth a couple of weeks ago. He's
really excited
about this new book coming out in January. The Indian inmates
held a
spiritual gathering in the prison gym, and served Indian frybread
and buffalo stew. I
sat with Leonard as he managed with difficulty to stuff down
a few mouthfuls;
he's got a lump the size of half a tennis ball on his cheek where
he's had all
the surgeries on his jaw, none of them really successful, though
at least he
can chew a bit now.
I'm hoping you will FWD this notice to people on your lists
& ask them to do
the same. If each Peltier supporter will do this, we can reach
the WHOLE
WORLD!! We need folks to pre-order NOW so we can print the book
in January. Many
thanks.
If you'd like to become part of a network I'm starting of
Peltier supporters
worldwide--whereby I can occasionally send out urgent Peltier
notices,
messages, alerts, etc to you & you can FWD them to your own
list of likeminded
people...who, in turn, will pass on the same message to their
lists...please let me
know by emailing me atHarvey@HaveYouThought.com with: 'YES I'LL
BE PART OF THE
NETWORK' on the subject line.
We WILL get Leonard out!!

Support Legislation for a U.S. Department of Peace
At this critical time in our nation's history, righteous action
is the
antidote to despair. Please participate in a powerful citizen
lobbying effort
to create a U.S. Department of Peace, sponsored in the House
of
Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This bill establishes
nonviolence as an organizing principle of American society, cultivating
an
array of peace-building policies and procedures. On April 8th,
this historic
legislation will be introduced for a second time; whether or
not it becomes
law is dependent on whether we, the people of the United States,
take the
time to make phone calls, lobby our Congresspeople, and in other
ways create
the political will to make it happen.
Please see www.butterflyspirit.org/projects/US_Department_of_Peace.htm
to
learn more about our involvement with this bill
WHAT IT IS:
The Department of Peace focuses on individual and group responsibilities
for
establishing nonviolence as an organizing principle in society.
The
Department would focus on nonmilitary peaceful conflict resolutions,
prevent
violence and promote justice and democratic principles to expand
human
rights. Domestically, the Department would be responsible for
developing
policies which address issues such as domestic violence, child
abuse,
mistreatment of the elderly, and other issues of cultural violence.
Internationally, the Department would gather research, analyze
foreign policy
and make recommendations to the President on how to address the
root causes
of war and intervene before as or before they begin, while improving
national
security, including the protection of human rights and the prevention
and
de-escalation of unarmed and armed international conflict.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
SET UP A MEETING IN YOUR HOME DISTRICT WITH YOUR CONGRESSIONAL
OFFICE on
April 8th. Recruit as
many people as you can to attend this meeting with you. Doing
this, we will
blanket the nation with meetings in support of the bill, both
in DC and
beyond. Our goal is a meeting with every single member of Congress
or members
of their staff so we need people from every Congressional district
in the
country to come forward and help.
GET AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO CALL, FAX AND EMAIL YOUR
REPRESENTATIVE on
April 8th. Your job between now and April 8 is to make sure that
everyone has
the name and phone and fax number of their Congressperson (easy
to
find...visit www.Congress.org), and to call them on April 7 to
remind them to
make the call. It is a good idea for you to keep a list of the
people who
have agreed to call and the needed numbers in case they misplace
the contact
information.
Between now and April 8, e-mail as many people as you can,
giving them the
information about the Department of Peace lobbying effort. Ask
them to help
us!
Most importantly, FOLLOW UP. It is not enough to merely let
people know that
the legislation is being introduced; our job is to lobby for
it, so that it
passes. Congress is a reactive body, but if our Congress people
do not hear
from us directly, then there is nothing for them to react to.
Revoke Presidential Authority to Wage War
Against all odds, there were enough signatures, e-mails telegrams
and phone
calls within the last 24 hours to Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich
of Ohio to
persuade him to introduce before the House of Representatives
in Washington,
D.C. a little known resolution that deprives the President of
his authority
to wage war, by returning war powers to Congress. However, we
must now
persuade Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert that there is a
growing
consensus if not a plurality to mandate the resolution for a
House ballot.
Therefore, please take a moment to e-mail Speaker Hastert
by simply saying,
"I am in favor of introducing HJ Resolution 20 for a vote."(
See below.) And
then please follow up congress people and senators. Always include
your
address or they will disregard the email. Speaker Hastert's e-mail:
Speaker@mail.house.gov.
Dear Speaker Dennis Hastert, I am in favor of introducing
HJ Resolution 20
for a vote.
Sincerely, ____________________
Please do this NOW. And please forward to Every other concerned
citizen you
know.
Note: House Joint Resolution 20 has been introduced as a non-partisan
bill
which will unequivocally revoke the power to drive to war from
the White
House.

Stop The Domestic Security Enhancement Act Of 2003
Send A Free Fax To Both Senators And Your Congressperson
In 2 Minutes
Under the guise of terrorism, Ashcroft has been secretly preparing
new
legislation that would significantly reduce privacy protections
and
essentially eliminate some of the most fundamental checks and
balances on
governmental power.
The draft "Domestic Security Enhancement Act Of 2003"
contains a multitude of
law enforcement and intelligence gathering powers -- many of
which are not
related to terrorism -- that would severely undermine basic constitutional
rights. For example, the proposed legislation would allow the
sampling and
cataloguing of innocent Americans' DNA without court order and
without consent.
We can stop this legislation and tell our elected officials
that they must
exercise appropriate oversight over the Justice Department and
FBI to prevent
abuse of power.

Senator Daschle Fight Back & Filibuster Often
Control of the Senate will change in January, with reproductive
rights,
environmental protection, the exercise of war powers, limiting
corporate
corruption, and civil liberties taking the biggest hits. While
the last year
has seen Senate Democrats block the worst proposed legislation,
essentially
nothing good has passed. But now the special interests that funded
the most
expensive midterm election in history want their payback, and
it will be
deeply damaging.
It is past time for Senate liberals to get a backbone. Senate
rules prevent
passage of essentially any legislation unless at least 60 senators
vote in
favor. This means that a determined minority, one willing to
use the rules
and to filibuster, can block the worst judicial appointments,
drilling in the
Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and the permanent elimination of the
estate tax. Such
senators will come under ferocious attack from the editorial
pages of the
mainstream press, from the pundits of the right, and their colleagues
in the
Senate. The only chance is if they hear overwhelmingly from the
public that
this is the right thing to do.
Such senators need leadership. Contact Senate Majority leader
Thomas Daschle
and urge him to stand up to the President's extreme agenda. Please

Religious Leaders' Forum on Opposing the War in Iraq
On Friday, October 11, a forum to express opposition to the
war in Iraq is
being chaired in Washington, D.C. by Rep. Danny Davis (IL). It
will be held
in Rayburn House Office Building, Rm. 2360; 10:30 a.m. Prominent
religious
leaders and other concerned citizens will challenge the Bush
Administration's
rush to war on Iraq. A list of Forum sponsors and speakers appears
below.
Please call your Member of the House of Representatives and
your Senators and
ask them to attend. Rep. Davis sent formal invitations to all
members on
the House side, but call your Senators as well and ask them to
attend.
Members receive dozens, if not hundreds, of such invitations
each week so
your call may be the ONLY way to ensure this Citizens' Forum

Dear Colleagues: [letter from Congressman Danny K. Davis]
I invite you to attend a "citizen's forum" I will
be chairing this Friday,
October 11, in Rayburn 2360 from 10:30 a.m. until noon. This
hearing will
bring together prominent religious leaders and other concerned
citizens who
will raise their voice to express the nation's concern over the
rush to war
with Iraq.
The New York Times reported on Saturday, "In religious
circles, the antiwar
voices are vastly outnumbering those in favor of a war."
Congress and the
President have largely chosen to ignore this consensus for peace
while
simultaneously proclaiming themselves to be people of faith.
This forum will
serve to remind our national leaders that notice is being taken
of such
hypocrisy and we shall be judged accordingly.
Speakers will include:
*Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council
of Churches of
Christ and former Member of Congress;
*Arun Gandhi, Director of the Gandhi Institute, and grandson
of Mahatma
Gandhi;
*Rev. Jim Wallis, founder of the Call to Renewal and editor
of Sojourners
magazine;
*Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun magazine;
*Liliane Baxter, chair of the board of the Fellowship of Reconciliation,
one
of the nation's oldest peace organizations;
*Father Joe Nangle, OFM of Pax Christi USA;
*Bishop Joe Gelinek, Episcopal Bishop of Minnesota;
*Mahdi Bray, Muslim American Freedom Foundation;
*Several United Methodist bishops;
*September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows;
*Peter Lems, American Friends Service Committee;

*William Sinkford, Unitarian Universalists of America;
*Bishop Imagene B. Stewart, National President of the African
American
Women's Clergy
*Ibrahim Abdil-Mu id Ramey, Fellowship of Reconciliation;
Founding Member of
Muslim Peace Fellowship
I hope you will take time from your busy schedule to attend
this important
event. Please contact Caleb Gilchrist of my staff at 5-5006 for
more
information.

Homeless Couple Who Protect Butterfly Habitat Face Eviction
San Mateo County is moving ahead with plans to remove Besh
Serdahely and
Thelma Caballero, the former San Francisco street couple who
live on San
Bruno Mountain, from their oak tree domicile.
I once visited their home with David Schooley, the founder
of San Bruno
Mountain Watch, a conservation group protecting the habitat of
endangered
species of butterflies on San Bruno. It was an incredible experience.
Their
oak tree home and environs were spotless. According to David,
Besh and
Thelma have been removing nonnative plants and creating more
open space for
the rare and endangered mission blue and silverspot butterflies.
Because of
their efforts, there is now no French broom or fennel in the
canyons in and
around the home where this couple live. These nonnative species
have been
pushing out the plants that these butterflies need for survival.
They have
done more work removing nonnative species in those canyons than
the San Mateo
Department of Parks and Recreation. Its time to stand up for
butterflies and
the homeless couple who are helping to keep them from extinction.
I recently suggested to San Mateo Board of Supervisors President
Jerry Hill
that he find a way to relax the rules or make this couple custodians
or
caretakers of the land so they can stay. I also called Ron Weaver
There are other caretakers that live on county property in
and around the San
Francisco Bay area. In a time of national turmoil and heartless
politicians
pressing for an illegal war and cutting back on domestic programs
that help
people, it is all too easy to forget the problems of the homeless.
In peace,

BRISBANE -- San Mateo County is moving ahead with plans to
remove Besh
Serdahely and Thelma Caballero, the former San Francisco street
couple who
live on San Bruno Mountain, from their oak tree domicile.
The county served the pair with a 30-day eviction notice on
Aug. 26. They
have lived in the arms of the oak for 12 years.
"We are very concerned about the welfare of these individuals,'
said Mary
Burns, director of the county department of parks and recreation,
but "the
law that we are operating under -- that you can't live on park
property -- is
still in effect."
Only the County Board of Supervisors has the power to amend
the law, and
board President Jerry Hill says Serdahely and Caballero have
to go.
"I believe San Mateo County is acting responsibly on
this," Hill said. "Where
do you draw the line? If you let one couple up there, you are
inviting all
the homeless of San Francisco to live there."
Serdahely and Caballero are in apparent violation of health
and fire codes,
because they compost their waste and burn fires for warmth and
cooking,
county and state officials said.
The plight of the couple has received intense media scrutiny.
As a result,
the county has received a large number of calls and e-mails,
Burns said. The
majority of the messages have urged the county to allow the couple
to stay.
But the publicity has likely torpedoed any possibility that
the county might
relax its rules for the Serdahely and Caballero. An exception
to the law
might lead to a squatters' invasion of county park lands, officials
said.
David Schooley, founder of the San Bruno Mountain Watch environmental
group,
and the couple's confidant, said he regrets the publicity. Mountain
Watch
would have preferred to quietly lobby the county on the couple's
behalf,
Schooley said.
Serdahely and Caballero have painstakingly removed invasive
plant species
from Owl Canyon, where they live, bringing back the habitat of
endangered
butterfly species, Schooley said. Serdahely's commitment to the
environment
includes refusing to ride in automobiles.

Homeless Couple Who Protect Butterfly Habitat Face Eviction
I have visited this couple's home with David Schooley.
It was an incredible
experience. Their oak tree home and environs was spotless. I
suggested to
San Mateo Board of Supervisors President Jerry Hill that he find
a way to
relax the rules or to make them custodians or caretakers of the
land so they
can stay. There are other caretakers that live on county property
in and
around the San Francisco Bay area. In a time of national turmoil
and
heartless politicians pressing for an illegal war, it is all
too easy to
forget the problems of the homeless. In peace, Alan

Help Stop the War on Iraq
The Bush White House is aggressively promoting war on Iraq,
against the
advice of its diplomats, and without strong support from Congress,
the
American public, or our allies.
Please join me in signing an online petition to oppose a war
that would
likely undermine both national and world security. Let's show
our
representatives that they have strong public support to stop
this war.
If you join me in signing today, your comments will be hand-delivered
to your
Senators as part of a national day of action on August 28th.
Constituent
meetings are being organized with Senate offices everywhere.
Sign the petition at:
http://www.moveon.org/nowar/
It's important that we speak out against a war in which many
of our young
people, and likely many more innocent Iraqis, would die.
Even top Republican leaders are publicly questioning a war:
Brent Scowcroft, the former National Security Advisor, says
a U.S. invasion
of Iraq "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and,
thus, destroy the
war on terrorism." He also says "there is scant evidence
to tie Saddam to
terrorist organizations, and even less to the Sept. 11 attacks."
Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) says the CIA has "absolutely
no evidence" that
Iraq possesses or will soon possess nuclear weapons.
Henry Kissinger says, "The notion of justified pre- emption
runs counter to
modern international law, which sanctions the use of force in
self-defense
only against actual -- not potential -- threats." Kissinger
also says,
"American military intervention in Iraq would be supported
only grudgingly,
if at all, by most European allies."
Dick Armey, the House Majority Leader (R-TX-26), says, "I
don't believe that
America will justifiably make an unprovoked attack on another
nation. It
would not be consistent with what we have been as a nation or
what we should
be as a nation."

Help Protect Native Sacred Landscapes
Your help is urgently needed in support of Senate Bill 1828
- critically
important legislation to secure legal protection for endangered
sacred lands
in California. Earlier this year, Senator Burton introduced SB
1828, Historic
Recourses: Native American Sacred Sites, and in the month of
May the Bill
passed the State Senate with bipartisan support. Currently SB
1828 is in the
State Assembly where we anticipate significant opposition. Therefore,
letters
of support from your Organization to your local Assemblyperson
are critically
needed.
As you well know, sacred sites have been continually used
by our Spiritual
Leaders since time immemorial. These ecosystems are also home
to an
incredible amount of biological diversity. However, many of these
places of
prayer and species diversity have been destroyed and many others
are facing
immediate threats of destruction via "development"
by extractive industries.
The Quechan Tribe of Southern California, for example, is struggling
to
protect one of their most sacred sites, Indian Pass, from being
destroyed by
a proposed cyanide heap-leach gold mine. In Northern California,
the Pit
River Tribe is working to protect the sacred Medicine Lake from
geothermal
development. Many tribal peoples all throughout the State are
fighting to
protect these lands, which are indispensable for the survival
of cultural and
biological diversity.
For many years we have known that the only way to stop the
relentless
destruction of our sacred places is with strong statutory protection.
SB
1828 will offer such protection! However, time is of the utmost
importance,
as the Assembly will take action on SB 1828 sometime during the
next two
weeks. So please send your letter immediately (a sample is attached).
Also,
encourage your friends, family, and sister organizations to give
their
support in the protection of sacred landscapes. If you have problems

Stop the War Post Card Campaign
If you do NOT want a war, one thing you can do is send Pres.
Bush a postcard
on Aug.15. Ask him not to start another war. Please pass it on.
Thanks!
I have been told the White House routinely ignores emails
& calls, but
written mail must be attended to. Post cards are not suspect
for terrorist
attacks.
If we all mail the cards on the same day, August 15th, it
will have maximum
impact. Hopefully we may receive news coverage to gainmore public
support,
but the important thing is to have as many peopleas possible
engaged in the
project.
So I am asking you to forward this e-mail. If we all reach
even five people
with eleven forwarding, it will reach forty eight million people.
I am asking
you to spend 23 cents and ten minutes to help stop a war.
Mail to: George W. Bush, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania
Ave NW,
Washington, DC 20500.
The rest of the world doesn't want this war! Try to also send
a postcard to
Senator John Edwards, who has taken a pro war stand against Iraq,
along with
Bush. Across the Nation, please send your Senate and Congressional
Representatives of your state a postcard.
Don't have a handy postcard? Cut one out - 3 1/2" x 5

you?

Decision on Senate Hearing Undermines Decades of U.S Indian

Committee on
Indian Affairs Reschedules Hearing on Western Shoshone Claims
Distribution
Act for August 2nd, 2002.
With less than 12 business days notice, Western Shoshone communities
have
learned that Senator Reid and the Senate Committee on Indian
Affairs have
rescheduled a hearing on the Western Shoshone Claims Distribution
Act (S958).
The legislation being promoted by Senator Reid was developed
without the
consent or participation of either the Western Shoshone Federally
recognized
Tribal Councils or the Traditional Government. The bill would
provide a one
time individual cash payment to all Western Shoshone in compensation
for the
extinguishment of title to their ancestral lands and all rights
attached to
those lands.
In what can only be interpreted as an attempt to railroad
this legislation
through committee without a full discussion of the issues at
stake, Senator
Reid's staff have informed the Western Shoshone that only three
representatives chosen by Senator Reid himself will be invited
to speak
before the committee. According to staff at the Senate Indian
Committee, as
August 2nd is the last day of the session before recess, it is
likely that
only the Chair (Senator Daniel Inouye) and Vice-Chair (Senator
Ben
Nighthorse-Campbell) of the Senate Committee will be present
for the hearing
along with Senator Reid. This is outrageous act of disrespect
on the part of
Senator Reid and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and
an affront to
the many generations of Western Shoshone people who have struggled
to have
their Treaty and rights respected.

Oppose AB1941 - the California "Anti-Rave Bill."
AB1941 passed the California Assembly on May 28th, 2002 with
a 79-0 vote, and
is currently making its way through the State Senate.
The "California Anti-Rave Bill" could have a devastating
impact on Late Night
Culture throughout the state by holding promoters liable for
any drug abuse
or related harms experienced by patrons at events. If this law
passes, it may
stop rave and electronic dance culture dead in its tracks as
promoters are no
longer able to hold events because of the legal and criminal
consequences.
This is like making baseball teams criminally liable if someone
at a baseball
game drinks too much beer. This bill takes the burden of personal
responsibility off the shoulders of individuals and places it
on the
shoulders of promoters. Instead of encouraging people to make
safe, healthy,
informed choices, this legislation makes promoters responsible
for all of it.
The San Francisco Late Night Coalition encourages you to act
now to prevent
Bill AB1941 from becoming law!
How Will Bill AB1941 Affect San Francisco Late Night Culture?
- This Legislation would add new requirements to the already
complex event
permitting process.
- Specifically targets events with electronic music, dancing
and the
potential capacity of 500+ people.
- Requires promoters to be certified of their awareness of
drug use and signs
of drug use at a party.
- Will hold promoters liable of any drug abuse or harms to
their patrons.
Singles out Late Night Events for a higher level of scrutiny
and a more
difficult permit process.
- Will make it harder to have outdoor events.

Genetic Engineering Alert
At last! Congress is currently considering five new bills
that would ensure
proper labeling and regulation of genetically engineered foods.
Please take
action today to support the passage of this legislation -- especially
the
Right to Know Act (H.R. 4814), which would guarantee labeling
of all
genetically engineered foods.
BACKGROUND
Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a long-time supporter
of Dr. John
Hagelin's work (see http://www.hagelin.org), has recently introduced
five
bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that provide a comprehensive
regulatory framework for all genetically engineered plants, animals,
bacteria, and other organisms.
The five bills are:
* the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act of 2002
(H.R. 4814)
* the Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act of 2002 (H.R. 4813)
* the Genetically Engineered Crop and Animal Farmer Protection
Act of 2002
(H.R. 4812)
* the Genetically Engineered Organism Liability Act of 2002 (H.R.
4816)
* the Real Solutions to World Hunger Act of 2002 (H.R. 4815)
Together, these bills address all the concerns about genetically
engineered
foods that the Natural Law Party has been voicing for the past
decade. In
short, these bills would:
* require food companies to label all foods containing ingredients
from
genetically engineered plants or animals;
* improve the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) oversight
and testing of
transgenic foods;
* better protect farmers and ranchers against powerful biotech
companies and
restore farmers' traditional right to save seed;
* clarify and reform liability and other legal issues associated
with
genetically modified crops and foods; and
* expand research to help developing nations better feed themselves.

Butterfly Needs Protection
The Carson wandering skipper butterfly received an emergency
listing as an
endangered species in November 2001 because of a listing petition
by the
Xerces Society, and a negotiated settlement between the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife
Service and the Center for Biological Diversity. The Service
has proposed to
make the listing permanent, but is being opposed by Lassen County
where the
butterfly resides. A new comment period has been initiated to
allow the
county and others to voice their opinion.
The Carson wandering skipper is currently known from only two
populations,
one in Washoe County, Nevada, and the other in Lassen County,
California.
There was another population near Carson City, Nevada, which
recently was
lost due to development activities at the site. According to
two reports
authored by Peter Brussard, a professor at University of Nevada,
Reno, the
butterfly is at tremendous risk of extinction at its two remaining
sites due
to livestock grazing, off road vehicle activity, encroaching
development,
changes in the water table, and pesticide drift.
Please write a letter today, supporting complete Endangered
Species Act
protection for the Carson wandering skipper. The comment period
closes June
6. If you choose to write an email, please write "Carson
wandering skipper
Endangered Species listing" in the subject line.

fw1renoskipper@r1.fws.gov
Sample letter:
Dear Mr. Williams:
Thank you and the Fish and Wildlife Service for your emergency
listing action
for the Carson Wandering Skipper, Pseudocopaeodes eunus obscurus.
We support
formal listing of this species under the Endangered Species Act.
The Carson wandering skipper is currently known from only
two populations,
one in Washoe County, Nevada, and one in Lassen County, California.
Two
recent reports by Peter F. Brussard clearly show that the current
status of
the butterfly warrants an Endangered Species listing and all
the protection
that would provide. Extinction of this butterfly could occur
from naturally
occurring events or other threats due to the small, isolated
nature of the
remaining populations. The sites where viable populations are
still found are
at risk due to livestock grazing, OHV activity, encroaching development,
changes in the water table and pesticide drift.
I believe the Carson wandering skipper should get full protection
under the

Overwhelmed with so many good causes? Want to start focusing
on the root
cause of most of the problems and suffering in the world --our
corrupt
campaign finance system-- in a tried and proven way that will
make a huge
difference??
Specifically: Want to help replace California and the nation's
corrupt
campaign finance system with a clean--FULL publicly funded--one
that would
allow ordinary people who aren't rich and don't want to sell
their souls to
the rich to get sufficient funds from the state to run and win
elections.
Well here's your chance to come through.
INVITE THE ALLIANCE FOR CLEAN ELECTIONS SPEAKERS BUREAU to
provide your next
meeting or brown bag lunch or special "Let's Get Rid of
This Corrupt System"
dinner party with a great speaker and an inspiring 17 minute
Bill Moyers
video.
"Clean Elections"-- COMPLETE PUBLIC FUNDING OF ELECTIONS--is
the reform that
makes all our other desired reforms possible. It is endorsed
by such major
organizations as the NAACP, the Fannie Lou Hamer Project, the
Sierra Club,
NOW, and dozens of major religious leaders including many from
Black
Communities throughout the United States. It is the only tried
and proven
model for COMPLETELY severing the connection between big money
and
candidates.
Our speaker and video explains to you what Clean Elections
is, and why it's
urgently needed in California, how it works, and how it would
impact on the
issues of most concern to your organization: education, civil
rights,
living-wage jobs, housing, healthy environment, healthcare costs,
how it
stands up against constitutional challenge, how it is enabling
more
progressives to win, and is in fact working incredibly well in
the first two
states to pass it by initiative (Maine and Arizona)
Featuring dynamic, experienced speakers (e.g. Medea Benjamin
and Kevin
Danaher (Global Exchange founders), Paul Turner (GreenLining
Institute),
Randy Hayes, founder of RainForest Action Network, Jeff Perlstein,
(Director
of Media Alliance), Brady Bevis (former Marin County Supervisor),
Gary Krane
(Director of the Alliance for Clean Elections and former award-winning
investigative TV journalist/producer), union and progressive
business
leaders, college organizers, religious and minority leaders,
etc.
A wonderfully inspiring Bill MOYERS 17minute video showing
that the full
publicly funded elections model is not merely a great idea, but
a tried and
proven one, already working in Maine and Arizona. We tailor the
presentation
to provide examples of how bills near and dear to your organization
were
killed due to our campaign finance system, and those you fought
against were
passed, due to the same system.
To schedule a speaker, call: Alliance for Clean Elections,
415 258 5683 or
415 845 7012 (cell), or email: DavidvGoliath@aol.com. Also check

California area.
SPEAKERS NEEDED:
If you are the head of AN ORGANIZATION INSTEAD OF JUST SAYING
SOMETHING?
something or otherwise have some title that might be a draw or

Stop Government-approved Policeware
WHAT IS THE CBDTPA?
The CBDTPA is a bill (S. 2048) proposed in Congress by Senators
Fritz
Hollings (D-SC) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), along with Senators
Daniel Inouye
(D-HI), John Breaux (D-LA), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Dianne Feinstein
(D-CA).
The acronym stands for "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television
Promotion
Act". Note that the CBDTPA was originally known as the "SSSCA"
while in draft
form.
WHAT WOULD THIS LAW DO?
The law would force all new personal computers and digital
home entertainment
devices sold in the United States to have government-approved
"policeware"
built-in.
This policeware would restrict your use of copyrighted material
on these
devices -- including music files and CD's, video clips, DVD's,
e-books, and
more.
WHO COULD GO TO JAIL?
You, if you're one of the millions of Americans who uses your
computers to
burn music CD's, listen to MP3's, share video files, etc. You'd
face up to
five years in federal prison and a $500,000 fine.
Think you'd be able to get around the law by removing the
policeware from
your personal computer? Think again -- anyone who defies the
government by
disabling or tampering with the policeware on their own computer,
in the
privacy of their own home or business, would also face five years
in the
slammer.
Since alternative operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD
would most likely
refuse to incorporate government policeware into their code,
users of these
open-source systems would also be eligible for hard time.
HOW CAN WE FIGHT THIS?
If we have any hope of keeping government policeware off of
our personal
computers and home entertainment devices, we must act quickly
and decisively.
For starters, you can sign our petition opposing the CBDTPA,
contact your
representative in Washington, tell a friend about this site,
and put a banner
on your own web site.
Also, if you're a constituent, feel free to contact the CBDTBA's
sponsors in
the Senate to let them know how you feel. Please be polite and
well-reasoned.

effective to
contact your Senator directly -- if you post a comment to the
above page,
please be sure to make a printout and mail / fax it to your Senator.

Letter to End All War
Last week George W. Bush revealed his "nuclear posture."
He requested money
to fund a new nuclear weapons program, and he asserted his willingness
to use
nuclear weapons if necessary in the next stage of the war on
terrorism, an
attack on Iraq.
This month, in an act of singular timeliness, Dr. Helen Caldicott
released
her new book, The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush's Military-Industrial
Complex. Caldicott, as you may know, has dedicated her life to
preventing
nuclear war. A pediatrician from Australia, she gave up her position
at
Harvard to carry on the work of the organization she founded,
Physcians for
Social Responsibility. In her updated introduction, she begins:
On September 11, before much of the world was even aware of
what had happened
in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, the Bush administration
had raised
the country's nuclear alert codes from defcon 6 to defcon 2 --
the highest
state of alert before the launch code is operable. Russian, the
country with
the second largest nuclear arsenal in the world, almost certainly
responded
in kind. As a result, thousands of nuclear weapns stood poised
on
hair-trigger alert, ready to be launched by the president of
either country
with a decision time of just three minutes. The intercontinental
nuclear-armed ballistic missiles controlled by these cods have
a
thirty-minute transit time from Russia to America or vice versa.
They cannot
be recalled. And they pose an ever-present threat of global nuclear
holocaust.
Also this month we learned that a "shadow government"
was installed as early
as October in two underground "bunkers" on the East
Coast, making it
immediately clear that America is preparing for the possibility
of nuclear
war.
It cannot happen. But if we do nothing to stop it, it's going
to happen
sooner or later -- maybe by April or May.
Who can stop it if not the women of this country and the men
who support
them? As women we know the value of a human life. As mothers,
we have never
wanted lose our children to war. Surely it is up to us to call
a halt to this
murder. But what can we do?
During the past few weeks, I have committed myself to coming
up with some way
to effectively express my objections to current policy. I have
had several
ideas, but they all take time to implement. And there is no more
time.
Tonight I went with my friend Sue Ann to see the marvellous
movie, Monsoon
Wedding. It is just a delicious treat, two hours at the great
banquet of
life, with all the lunacy and nobility of the human drama, the
kind of movie
that brings tears to one's eyes and belly-fulls of laughter to
one's throat,
in awe of the miracle which embraces us at all times.
We cannot allow its destruction! Leaving the theater, I thought,
I will go
and sit on the lawn in front of the White House until I am permitted
to see
the President. And when I see him, I will tell him, There has
got to be
another way.
I know there is, and so do you. I know that terrorism can
be resolved by the
united efforts of the governments of the world to act as they
have been
mandated to do: to protect and provide for the needs of the people.
Violence can be met without violence. Bloodshed can be countered
by
determination. Conflict can be resolved by the power of knowledge.
Agreements
can be made and achieved. There are enough resources on this
planet to
provide for every single woman, man and child on the planet,
all six and a
half billion. If only it were fairly distributed!
I am willing to go sit in front of the White House, but I
can't do it alone.
And I can't do it tonight. I have a job to go to, a family to
care for, pets
to feed.
But I can write letters.
So I have decided to write letters to the White House every
single day,
beginning with a letter to the First Lady. I have decided to
choose words
that will create a basis of agreement between us, rather than
words which
divide. I believe that there is one truth to which we all ultimately
subscribe, regardless of how we choose to frame it. Love is the
foundation on
which that great truth resides, and it overrides all the divisions
we have
put in its way.
I wrote my first letter tonight, and I have attached it to
this message. I
ask you to join me. We can flood the White House with our letters
and prayers
and pleas for a stop to the suicide mission our government has
proposed to
inflict on us all.
Please feel free to send my letter if you like it, adding
your words and
signature. Better yet, write your own. Send it by mail, since
letters are
more substantial and effective than e-mails. Forward this e-mail
to everyone
on your list. And let's keep those cards and letters coming,
until this
cataclysm is averted once and for all.
There's plenty to do after that, to rescue, restore and rebuild
our world.
Ever in Her divine service,
Stephanie Hiller www.awakenedwoman.com

Nuclear Posture Review Alert
Please write to your representatives to insist that the Nuclear
Posture
Review be reviewed. As the New York Times stated, " Mr.
Bush needs to send
that document back to its authors and ask for a new version less
menacing to
the security of future American generations." Its up to
us to ask our elected
officials to stop this lunacy. In peace, Alan
America as Nuclear Rogue
New York Times Editorial
March 12, 2002
If another country were planning to develop a new nuclear weapon
and
contemplating pre-emptive strikes against a list of non-nuclear
powers,
Washington would rightly label that nation a dangerous rogue
state. Yet such
is the course recommended to President Bush by a new Pentagon
planning paper
that became public last weekend. Mr. Bush needs to send that
document back to
its authors and ask for a new version less menacing to the security
of future
American generations.
The paper, the Nuclear Posture Review, proposes lowering the
overall number
of nuclear warheads, but widens the circumstances thought to
justify a
possible nuclear response and expands the list of countries considered
potential nuclear targets. It envisions, for example, an American
president
threatening nuclear retaliation in case of "an Iraqi attack
on Israel or its
neighbors, or a North Korean attack on South Korea or a military
confrontation over the status of Taiwan."
In a world where numerous countries are developing nuclear,
biological and
chemical weapons, it is quite right that America retain a credible
nuclear
deterrent. Where the Pentagon review goes very wrong is in lowering
the
threshold for using nuclear weapons and in undermining the effectiveness
of
the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
The treaty, long America's main tool for discouraging non-nuclear
countries
from developing nuclear weapons, is backed by promises that as
long as
signatories stay non-nuclear and avoid combat alongside a nuclear
ally, they
will not be attacked with nuclear weapons. If the Pentagon proposals
become
American policy, that promise would be withdrawn and countries
could conclude
that they have no motive to stay non-nuclear. In fact, they may
well decide
they need nuclear weapons to a
